La Plata County law requires dog licensing, offering key benefits: it supports La Plata County Humane Society's work with homeless animals, helps reunite lost pets, reduces impound fees, and ensures compliance with local ordinances. License your dog today!

Fees

  • City Residents

    Altered animal – $15 per year
    Unaltered animal – $60 per year

    ($30 license and $30 permit are required)

  • County Residents

    Altered animal – $15 per year
    Unaltered animal – $30 per year

  • Requirements

    Proof of your pet’s current rabies certificate Proof of spay/neuter Valid photo ID

Pet Licenses May be Purchased

Online for curbside pick-up: You may purchase your pet’s license online following a few easy steps. Please click this link: PET LICENSE APPLICATION. After you submit your application you will receive a call from a team member that it has ben processed and ready for pick-up. If you are 62 years of age or older, you qualify for a free licensing with valid photo ID.

Onsite: Licenses may be purchased at La Plata County Humane Society during business hours at, 1111 S. Camino del Rio, Durango CO 81303.

Please note: Tags are intended to last 1 or 3 years, depending on your purchase. If this is a renewal, you will receive an updated certificate and tag with the current year.

Picking Up Your Pet

Owners whose pets are brought in by Animal Protection are required to pay an impound fee associated with their licensed or unlicensed pet at time of pick-up. Download our La Plata County Paw Laws handout to stay up-to-date with local city and county dog ordinances.

Signs of Animal Abuse

  • Poor body condition and noticeable trauma

  • Dogs left outside without food, water, or shelter

  • Sick or injured pet that has not been treated

Impound & Boarding

  • Licensed Pet – $40

  • Unlicensed Pet- $60

  • Boarding – $20/day
