Mission Statement:

The La Plata County Humane Society is a nonprofit organization created to enhance the quality of life in our community by encouraging the humane treatment of animals. Our philosophy is to preserve the lives of the animals entrusted to us.

The Humane Society was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, to attempt to find homes for unwanted animals, and to encourage kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education.

The La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1973. The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for the new facility. The Shelter is directed by nine elected board members. The Humane Society has a capacity to house over 50 dogs and 40 cats. In 2000, we added a veterinarian to staff to insure that all animals are spayed or neutered and have all veterinarian care/needs
before leaving our facility.
