Introduction

Join our team of volunteers that are caring for the homeless animals of La Plata County!

Volunteers interested in helping at the Humane Society should attend a shelter orientation. Orientations are held at least once per month and all orientations will be held in the Board Room.(Prior registration is required). In addition, some positions require further training (see positions for details).

Volunteer Requirements

  • Be at least 14 years old . Volunteers under the age of 17 are assistant volunteers and will be with a parent or guardian or a mentor at all times while they are volunteering.  The adult mentor is required to attend orientation/ training with the younger volunteer to understand the policies and procedures at the Humane Society.
  • Complete paperwork (intake and statement of understanding)
  • A copy of your Drivers License for our records.
  • Attend orientation and training sessions as required by the desired position (see volunteer position descriptions for training requirements).
  • Background check by the state of Colorado, if interested in Mobil pet program or Adoption Patrol. Volunteers will be checked through our database by a staff member to determine that they have no previous history with cruelty to animals. 
  • Follow policies and procedures at the La Plata County Humane Society.  
  • Volunteer Dog Walkers are required to follow the dog walking guidelines. Failure to follow these guidelines could result in the termination of a volunteer.
